All your flower bulbs should now be planted in the ground in your school garden. It seems like the flower bulbs are sleeping under the ground now, quietly waiting for the spring. But actually they’re not sleeping, because a lot is happening under the ground before the spring arrives!

The shoots are forming

In the autumn and winter months, the food that is stored in the flower bulb is being used to make the leaves, the stem and the flowers inside the bulb. These three parts together are called the shoot. The shoot is slowly growing inside the flower bulb, until finally it will push out through the top. When the spring arrives and the bulb thinks it’s time to come out from under the ground, the shoot will start growing really quickly.

Baby bulbs

At the same time, new roots are also growing down into the soil. When the food stored in the flower bulb runs out in the spring, the roots will absorb more food from the ground. And the leaves will also help to feed the plant! When the sunlight shines on the leaves, they make sugar using carbon dioxide from the air and water and minerals from the soil. This chemical factory in the plant’s leaves is called photosynthesis. The food is used to make new baby bulbs via the roots.

Goodbye 2018

You’ve done all the hard work now. Your flower bulbs are under the ground and getting ready to produce beautiful flowers in the spring. So, this is the lastblog of 2018. We hope you have enjoyed our Bulb Blog. As soon as the first shoots poke their heads up above the ground, you will hear from us again.

See you next year!

Greetings,
