This week’s flower bulb of the week is the daffodil.

In love with itself

Daffodils can also be called Narcissus. The name Narcissus comes from an Ancient Greek story. The story is about a young hunter, called Narcissus, who never wanted to fall in love with anyone else. Looking in the water at his own reflections, he fell in love with himself. In the end, he went totally crazy and he didn’t think about eating or drinking any more – only about himself. In the end, Narcissus withered away and died. The only thing that was left was a flower – yellow on the inside with white petals around it. That’s right, a daffodil!

Twelve brothers and sisters

There are twelve brothers and sisters in the daffodil family. And they are all different. Some of them have white or speckled flowers. Some of them have double flowers, some have large yellow trumpets and some have clusters of yellow or white flowers.

Pretty

Did you know that daffodils can also be planted in a grassy area? You could even plant them in the shape of a heart, or to spell out a word, like ‘cute’ or ‘spring’. That would look really great in the spring!

P.S. Don’t mow the grass until all the flowers are dead; that way, the daffodils will come back up next year too.
